Please, do not take Tax advice from the Internet.

There are quite a few people spouting tax advice on the internet, some good, some bad, some satire.

First, since they don't know your tax situation, they only offer generic advice, which may not apply to you or could actually harm you.

Second, if the advice they give is erroneous (and not obviously satire), the tax practitioner can be held liable, so what you hear is the legaleze version, decorated to sound like the perspon is a tax authority.

Third, they don't discuss meaty issues, that require in-depth interviews to determine the best course of action.

If you see something interesting or have questions, give me a call, text or make an appointment and we can review your taxes together.

How do I fill out the new W4?

Starting a new job or updating your tax withholding? The W4 is designed to withhold as close to what you actually owe as possible.  This means you get more per paycheck, but may have no refund, or even owe, at tax time.

If you have more than one income, there is a selection check box in step 2 to indicate that you have a second job, but this only works if the wages are close to being equal. If you're married and you both work, both spouses should indicate a second job by selectiong the check box. Step 2 helps, but doesn't work if there is a big difference in wages, see step 4 to make an adjustment. There is a calculation for the child and dependent credit in step 3, make sure only one parent takes the credit. You can also add a fixed withdrawal per paycheck in step 4 to make sure you don't owe in April.

Confused? Give me a call for a FREE consultation and a custom W4.

    • Use the chart in the W4 to have extra money withheld from the higher paying job.
    • Monitor your Year-To-Date withholding to make sure you have enough taken out to avoid surprises at tax time.
    • Schedule an appointment for a FREE (yes, absolutely FREE, no obligation, no hard sell, no strings attached) evaluation of your tax withholding.

Pricing is based on the complexity of your tax return.

    Enrolled Agent

Check my EA status with the IRS.

Enrolled Agents (EA) are America’s Tax Experts.

Enrolled Agents (EA) have been around since the 1880’s, originally created to handle Civil War claims brought in front of the Treasury department. In 1913, their role was expanded to include income tax. Today, you must pass three rigid exams and pass a background check to become an EA. EA’s are licensed to practice before the treasury department and we serve as America’s Tax preparers. EAs are granted unlimited practice rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS and are authorized to advise, represent, and prepare tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, estates, trusts, and any entities with tax-reporting requirements. Enrolled Agents are the only federally-licensed tax practitioners.

You can check my EA status by going to:

    https://irs.treasury.gov/rpo/rpo.jsf

    My Zip Code: 12863

    Last Name: Miller

The search will show that I am enrolled as an EA with the IRS.

I am a member of the National Assiocation of Enrolled Agents and the

New York State Society of Enrolled Agents.

I sold my house, will I owe taxes?

If you sold your house, you may owe taxes on the increase in value. The broker who handled your sale may send you a form 1099-S, listing the sale price of your house and a copy is also sent to the IRS. It's up to you to file the proper forms to let the IRS know you do or do not owe tax on the gain.

The rule is you have to own the house for five years and live in it for at least two of those five years. Then you can get an exclusion on part of the gain. But there are some restrictions that may disallow the exclusion and there are several exceptions where you may be able to get a partial exclusion.

Give me a call for FREE consultation to discuss your tax situation.

    IRS Payment Plans

Did you know that the IRS offers payment plans? If you cannot pay on time (generally April 15th), you can setup a payment plan with the IRS. You can do this on-line at www.IRS.gov.

    Some things to know:

    1. Make sure you can pay the schedule you set up.
    2. You will still be assesed interest and penalties by the IRS.
    3. Approval by the IRS may be needed.
    4. There are limits to the maximum amount of taxes you owe.
